There are three main players in the wireless tower space: $86-billion market value American Tower, $53-billion Crown Castle International—both structured as real-estate investment trusts, or REITs—and $23 billion SBA Communications (SBAC). Wells Fargo analyst Jennifer Fritzsche said “in our view, Crown Castle checks multiple infrastructure boxes for wireless carriers (small cells, fiber to the tower, and macro). We believe this multi-tentacle approach will serve it well as carriers’ network needs become more focused on densification and fiber centric. Simply put, Crown Castle has more tools in the toolkit.”
