A Georgia House committee approved legislation Monday authorizing nonprofit telephone companies and electric membership corporations (EMCs) to provide broadband service in rural Georgia. Over a span of two years, the House Rural Development Council held hearings in rural counties across the state and councilmember Rep. Terry Rogers (R-Clarkesville) noted "the two biggest concerns we heard were workforce development and broadband." Rep. Todd Jones (R-Cumming) added "this is an economic imperative. We have to get broadband across [all] 159 [Georgia] counties."
