We’re working to upgrade Allegheny County’s wireless infrastructure through the installation of 74 small cells, which work in conjunction with fiber optic cable and towers. Next-generation wireless networks will enable 5G technologies, increase public safety and improve mobile coverage.

Why Allegheny County needs more wireless infrastructure.

Allegheny County’s economy is powered by innovative tech companies, advanced manufacturing, elite universities and research institutions, and the Pittsburgh International Airport, all of which rely on wireless connectivity. As the second largest county in the state with more than 1.2 million residents in urban, suburban and rural settings, mobile coverage is critical.

With the City of Pittsburgh as its urban core, Allegheny County is home to 130 diverse municipalities—the most of any county in Pennsylvania—and public safety is vital to all its communities. In many areas, 80 percent of 911 calls are now made from a wireless device. It has never been more important to ensure fast, reliable coverage. The time to upgrade and enhance the county’s wireless coverage and capacity is now—and small cell solutions, or “small cells,” are a key component.

Where we're installing small cells.

Small cells are installed in the right of way, often on infrastructure like street signs, utility poles and streetlights. You may have walked by them before without noticing them. Working in partnership with city staff, we plan to enable improved wireless provider service while keeping Allegheny County's character intact.
