Why Charleston needs more wireless infrastructure.
Charleston first rose to prominence as an 18th century seaport and the place where the Civil War started, yet the city is unquestionably modern today. Its economy has drawn heavyweights from the aerospace, biomedical, automotive, IT, healthcare, retail and internet services industries. Charleston’s also been nicknamed “Silicon Harbor” for its booming tech startup scene. For quality of life, Charleston holds unique appeal among locals as well as the more than five million tourists who flock to its breathtaking architecture, renowned restaurants and countless cultural attractions each year.
Laid-back in feeling but bustling and dynamic in fact, Charleston’s demand for mobile data is growing exponentially—which makes an upgraded wireless infrastructure an urgent need. It’s even more critical for public safety—in many areas, 80 percent of emergency calls to police, firefighters and other first responders originate from mobile devices. Small cell solutions, or “small cells,” are a key component of fast, reliable wireless service. In Charleston and other major cities, small cells often are used to complement existing wireless infrastructure, such as towers, to add much-needed coverage and capacity.

Where we're installing small cells.
Small cells are installed in the right of way, often on infrastructure like street signs, utility poles and streetlights. You may have walked by them before without noticing them. Working in partnership with city staff, we plan to enable improved wireless provider service while keeping Charleston's character intact.
