We have helped supplement Charlotte's existing wireless infrastructure by deploying a small cell network of low-powered antennas called "small cells" that sit close to the ground, are connected by fiber optic cable and can handle large amounts of data at high speeds. Small cells can pave the way for next-generation networks such as 5G, which promise to expand "smart city" innovations including autonomous vehicles and citywide data sharing.

Why Charlotte needs more wireless infrastructure.

Charlotte is one of America’s fastest growing metropolitan areas. The Queen City and its surrounding communities added more residents last year than all but 10 US cities—and it’s by far the most populous locale in the Carolinas, with 7.4 million people living within a 100-mile radius. Charlotte also has emerged as a dynamic economic hub; 291 companies on the Fortune 500 have one or more facilities there.

From Charlotte’s central business district to its satellite commercial areas and historic neighborhoods, the demand for mobile data is growing exponentially—and it’s critical that the city enhance its wireless coverage and capacity. It’s especially important when you consider public safety; in many areas, 80 percent of emergency calls to police, firefighters and other first responders originate from mobile phones. Small cell solutions, or “small cells,” are a key component of reliable service. Small cells are often used to complement existing wireless infrastructure, such as towers, to add much-needed capacity in highly populated areas.

Where we're installing small cells.

Small cells are installed in the right of way, often on infrastructure like street signs, utility poles and streetlights. You may have walked by them before without noticing them. Working in partnership with city staff, we plan to enable improved wireless provider service while keeping Charlotte's character intact.
