Looking ahead, we aim to enhance Dayton’s existing wireless infrastructure by deploying a small cell network of low-powered antennas called "small cells" that are connected by fiber optic cable and can handle large amounts of data at high speeds. Small cells also hold promise for the future—paving the way for next-generation technology and enabling connectivity across Ohio.

Why Dayton needs more wireless infrastructure.

Known for being the birthplace of the Wright brothers, Dayton has a rich history of innovation and is recognized as a research and development hub for fields like aeronautical, astronautical and industrial engineering. Despite recent shifts in manufacturing jobs, Dayton was ranked the #1 medium-sized city for economic development and now focuses on industries like insurance, legal, healthcare and government. Dayton’s bustling suburbs are also on the rise as the “Gem City” continues to innovate and grow.

To keep Dayton on the cutting edge, it needs to meet the exponentially growing demand for mobile connectivity. This is especially true when it comes to public safety. In many areas, 80 percent of emergency calls to police, firefighters and other first responders are initiated on mobile devices. The solution: small cell technology, or “small cells,” which can be used to complement existing wireless infrastructure, such as towers, to add much-needed capacity in Dayton. And now that more than 50 percent of households rely exclusively on mobile phones, “small cells” play an important role in expanding coverage.

Where we're installing small cells.

Small cells are installed in the right of way, often on infrastructure like street signs, utility poles and streetlights. You may have walked by them before without noticing them. Working in partnership with city staff, we plan to enable improved wireless provider service while keeping Dayton's character intact.
