Why Lexington needs more wireless infrastructure.
Lexington is the second largest city in the state and is known as the “horse capital of the world.” The region is known for its rich horse history and universities. It is where rugged landscapes and striking vistas blend perfectly with a frontier spirit and an undeniably modern outlook. Lexington’s unique geography—complete with narrow valleys, dense forests, rolling hills, winding rivers and close-knit communities—are what have truly endeared the city to residents and visitors for generations.
This unique geography, and the exponentially growing demand for mobile data, create real challenges to fast, reliable mobile connectivity. The state’s current wireless infrastructure is in dire need of an upgrade, and public safety is a primary reason why. In many areas, 80 percent of emergency calls to police, firefighters and other first responders are initiated on mobile devices. The solution: small cell technology, or “small cells,” which can be used to complement existing wireless infrastructure, such as towers, to add much-needed capacity in Kentucky’s cities. And now that more than 50 percent of households rely exclusively on mobile phones, small cells play an important role in expanding coverage.
