Why Long Island needs more wireless infrastructure.
While countless commuters still travel to and from Manhattan for work each day, Long Island’s economy is showing signs of steady growth in its own right, led by industries such as construction, manufacturing, transportation, biotechnology, finance and healthcare. You’ll find plenty of attractions for locals and tourists alike across the Island’s neighborhoods, as well. There’s the upscale yet family-friendly atmosphere of Garden City; Hempstead’s historic landmarks, state parks and museums; and Oyster Bay’s pristine beaches.
With so many people and so much going on, Long Island’s demand for mobile data keeps growing exponentially, requiring a wireless network that can meet the community’s needs. Long Island’s wireless infrastructure is under immense pressure, especially considering public safety—in many areas, 80 percent of emergency calls are placed from mobile devices—and a fast, reliable network is critical in providing access to police officers, firefighters and other first responders. Fortunately, small cell solutions, or “small cells,” are used to enhance existing wireless infrastructure (such as towers) to add much-needed coverage and capacity. Discover more about small cells and the benefits they'll bring to your community.
Where we've installed small cells.
Small cells are installed in the right of way, often on infrastructure like street signs, utility poles and streetlights. You may have walked by them before without noticing them. Working in partnership with city staff, we plan to enable improved wireless provider service while keeping Long Island's character intact.
