We worked with the City of Los Angeles to deploy hundreds of low-powered antennas, most commonly referred to as "small cells," throughout the city. These small cells are connected by fiber optic cable and handle large amounts of data at high speeds. The small cell network will immediately help relieve network congestion, and pave the way for next-generation networks, such as 5G. This technology will boost existing industries such as entertainment, tourism and hospitality, while offering a leading edge to connectivity-driven emerging industries such as biomedical, digital, information technology and environmental technology.

Why Los Angeles needs more wireless infrastructure.

The City of Los Angeles is home to a dynamic and growing business culture. Its vibrant and thriving commercial sector is comprised of industries from professional and business services, and direct international trade and entertainment to wholesale trade and logistics. Additionally, Los Angeles County is top-ranked nationwide in manufacturing. Local industries include apparel, computer and electronic components, transportation equipment, fabricated metal and food. Fueled by trade with the Pacific Rim, Los Angeles and Long Beach are the busiest container ports in the nation. And, as home to the film, television and recording industries, as well as important cultural facilities, the city serves as a principal global cultural center.

Thriving industry and culture in Los Angeles demand fast, reliable wireless connectivity. Beyond keeping people connected and helping ensure that business flourishes, wireless is critical to public safety—in many areas, 80 percent of all 911 emergency calls to police, firefighters and other first responders are made on mobile devices. Small cells are key to upgrading and enhancing the city’s wireless coverage and capacity.

Where we're installing small cells.

Small cells are installed in the right of way, often on infrastructure like street signs, utility poles and streetlights. You may have walked by them before without noticing them. Working in partnership with city staff, we plan to enable improved wireless provider service while keeping Los Angeles' character intact.
