Why Palo Alto needs more wireless infrastructure.
In Palo Alto, at the heart of Silicon Valley, tech is king. Smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices are ubiquitous—from the city’s bustling downtown to the outskirts of Stanford University. As demand for data continues to grow exponentially, it is essential to have the necessary infrastructure to ensure reliable wireless coverage. With a combined population of nearly 80,000, Palo Alto and Stanford constitute a lively, tech-driven region.
The residents and businesses of Palo Alto will continue to have access to leading edge wireless technology thanks to the expansion of the small cell network. The network uses a series of small cells—connected by high-capacity fiber optic cable—to create a more reliable network. The technology is designed to supplement the existing communications infrastructure and expand coverage. Beyond the considerable residential and business benefits, small cells will create a more resilient wireless network which is critical to accessing public safety services, as 80% of 911 calls in many areas originate from a mobile device.

Where we're installing small cells.
Small cells are installed in the right of way, often on infrastructure like street signs, utility poles and streetlights. You may have walked by them before without noticing them. Working in partnership with city staff, we plan to enable improved wireless provider service while keeping Palo Alto's character intact.
