Small cells can provide immediate enhancements to Salt Lake City’s mobile coverage today—and help ease the transition to next-generation networks such as 5G, which will make innovations from autonomous vehicles to citywide data sharing possible.
Small cells are installed in the right of way, often on infrastructure like street signs, utility poles and streetlights. You may have walked by them before without noticing them. Working in partnership with city staff, we plan to enable improved wireless provider service while keeping all the history and character of the Salt Lake City area intact.
Why Salt Lake needs more wireless infrastructure.
Known to many as “the crossroads of the West,” Salt Lake City is where a business-friendly economy and a booming technology sector intersect with an ideal quality of life and a flourishing tourism and recreation industry. Approximately 2.3 million people live and work in Salt Lake City and the surrounding metropolitan area, and the numerous ski resorts and national parks close to the city attract a significant number of visitors each year.
Here, the need for fast, reliable wireless connectivity is growing exponentially for personal use, for workplace productivity—and particularly in the area of public safety, where, in many areas, 80 percent of all emergency calls to police, firefighters and other first responders now originating on mobile phones. Small cell solutions, or “small cells,” are a key component of expanding mobile coverage and capacity.
