Why San Francisco needs more wireless infrastructure.
San Francisco is the technology capital of the world, making state-of-the-art wireless infrastructure especially critical to ensure our residents, businesses and communities thrive. Across the city, wireless connectivity is essential for residents and businesses that drive innovative new technologies. With an estimated population of more than 900,000 people—as well as tens of millions of tourists and visitors exploring the city each year—it’s clear that San Francisco’s demand for mobile data is growing exponentially.
This demand for more data places a burden on existing wireless infrastructure. At a time when 80 percent of 911 calls in many areas are made from a mobile device, wireless connectivity is also a matter of public safety. We are working to upgrade and enhance the city’s wireless coverage and capacity—and small cells are a key component.

Where we're installing small cells.
Small cells are installed in the right of way, often on infrastructure like street signs, utility poles and streetlights. You may have walked by them before without noticing them. Working in partnership with city staff, we plan to enable improved wireless provider service while keeping San Francisco's character intact.
