Why San Mateo needs more wireless infrastructure.
The City of San Mateo is one of the largest cities south of San Francisco, with a rich history centered around the San Francisco Bay Area. It is also part of Silicon Valley and boasts robust jobs in technology, healthcare, financial services, government and retail. San Mateo has seen a continuous increase in population, and with more residents and local businesses, wireless connectivity becomes even more essential.
With its thriving industry and culture, there is significant demand for fast, reliable wireless connectivity in San Mateo. In addition to keeping people connected and ensuring businesses flourish, wireless is critical to public safety, as, in many areas, 80 percent of all emergency calls to police, firefighters and first responders now originating from mobile devices. As consumers, we demand a lot from our devices, and as this demand for mobile data grows exponentially, it places a heavy burden on San Mateo’s existing wireless infrastructure. Upgrading and enhancing the city’s wireless coverage is critical for a growing community and small cells are a key component. Small cells are used in cities nationwide to complement existing wireless infrastructure, such as towers, adding much-needed capacity and coverage to highly populated areas.

Working with the community.
At Crown Castle, we do more than just connect communities with our infrastructure; we connect with our communities. Our Connected by Good program is one way we give and volunteer in the communities where we live and work.
Connected by Good is a way for Crown Castle to thank the communities where our employees live and work—and to show how much the company cares about being a good neighbor. Helping to make these spaces more beautiful reinforces our commitment to enabling connections and improving communities.
We have worked with a variety of local organizations that align with our Connected by Good pillars and connect Crown Castle to municipal leaders, including Square Root Academy 5000 Watts, Code Nation San Francisco/Oakland, Dev/Mission Bay Area, Boys and Girls Club, California Firefighters Foundation and UNCF.
Where we're installing small cells.
Small cells are installed in the right of way, often on infrastructure like street signs, utility poles and streetlights. You may have walked by them before without noticing them. Working in partnership with city staff, we plan to enable improved wireless provider service while keeping San Mateo's character intact.
