Who is doing the work?
Crown Castle is the nation's largest provider of shared communications infrastructure. Our towers, small cells, rooftop antennas and fiber are used by wireless carriers and other data providers to bring you the connectivity you depend on. We've worked in thousands of municipalities nationwide to give communities like yours access to essential data, technology, and wireless services—opening the door to countless opportunities and possibilities.
What is communications infrastructure?
When you pull up directions on your phone, or accept a call on your smart watch, you don’t often think about everything that goes into making that interaction happen. Here are the foundational pieces of infrastructure needed to connect and support your community.
- Towers: Towers are the most established—and visible—pieces of communications infrastructure. They provide broad wireless coverage to large geographic areas.
- Small cells: Small cells are fiber-connected antennas, usually located on existing structures like streetlights and utility poles. They work in conjunction with tower infrastructure to provide greater wireless coverage and capacity for data-heavy devices and newer technologies like 5G. Learn more about small cells here.
- Fiber: Once a wireless signal reaches a small cell or a tower antenna, fiber optic cable is often used to transmit the data to its final destination using pulses of light at high speeds and low latency.
